THE LEGACY OF MATS SUNDIN

Ever since Benji came up with the idea for this blog, we knew that we needed to start off with a bang. After a few minutes of intense brainstorming, fist fights, and a best of seven series of EA SPORTS NHL ’08, this is what we came up with:

THE LEGACY OF MATS SUNDIN: Does anyone really give a shit?

If you skim through all the records, the many years he has been in the league, and the stats that he has racked up, one might say that he is one of the greats, but does anyone really give a shit?
Mats Sundin is regarded as one of the greatest hockey players to come out of Sweden, but the fact remains that he is an accomplice to the death of the Maple Leafs fans’ confidence. Is it his fault?...perhaps not. If I had to describe it in a way that everyone can understand, he’s the older kid on “The Bad News Bears” that was a good player stuck on a brutal team. But even in that movie, no matter if the team can win, they still lose in the end.

So Sundin will go down as the guy who never won the cup, unless he accepts a trade, apparently from the hand full of teams that will pay top dollar for his services. We have all heard the interest that the Red Wings, Canadiens, and even the Maple Leafs have shown, but how the Canucks can offer $10 Million per year is beyond me. That’s one expensive Swedish meatball, when if it was me, I’d prefer generic homemade balls of meat. Will Sundin be the NHL’s Kevin Garnett and bring a Stanley Cup to his new team? Maybe Vancouver? (providing he accepts the offer that he is stupid not to accept)? Probably not, because again…does anyone really give a shit?

Mats Sundin is a plague. He is a plague that will follow a team, and only because he caught this plague from the city of Toronto. Don’t get me wrong, Toronto is a great city, but they have an incredible ability to make good players mediocre, mediocre players terrible, and Montreal Canadiens fans into figure skaters. Toronto, as well as any other teams interested need to distance themselves from Mats as soon as possible if they hope for any form of building a successful team. If you can’t picture a certain player donning another uniform, there’s no sense in purchasing the extra press distractions as well.

Do the Maple Leafs have hope?...let’s take a look.

This brings me to our first in a weekly series of reasons why the Toronto Maple Leafs are brutal:
#1. Ass-clowns like Bryan McCabe
Bryan McCabe falls into the category of mediocre players turned terrible. Poor decisions in the corners, during clutch times in the game, and the way he conducts himself on the ice is sad. In order for Toronto to have any hope in a turnaround, the players that played on the brutal team need to be let go and the team needs to go through a complete overhaul. Getting rid of guys like Andrew Raycroft, Darcy Tucker, Hal Gill, Wade Belak, etc. is a start, but the job needs to be finished with the termination of McCabe and Sundin. Future hope?---Impact defenseman prospect Luke Schenn, and Toronto Marlies’ goaltender Justin Pogge.

So after all this hype, are we ready to see Sundin in a new uniform, or again...Do we really give a shit?

More to come folks
Stay tuned..........
